Now will I sing to my well beloved a song of my beloved touching his vineyard. My well-beloved hath a vineyard in a very fruitful hill: And he fenced it, and gathered out the stone....16th October 2017
The bible book of Proverbs has so much to say about the value of sound advice. Proverbs 15:22 says ‘Without counsel, plans go awry, but in the multitude of counselors they are established’ and Proverbs 20:5 instructs us, ‘Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out’.
Good advice is so important that every person in position surrounds himself or herself with advisers so they take right decisions. This is the same with the Christian. No one is above counsel. Some take counsel from their buddies, relatives, spouses, fellow worker, or confidant, but, who do you go to for advise? Who does the Christian go to for counsel?
Regardless of the situation or circumstance, you must always go to God FIRST for his counsel. Good and noble kings in the Bible always enquired from God what to do at different points in their lives or reign. King Jehoshaphat told King Ahab of Israel: ‘Please inquire for the word of the Lord for me’ (1 Kings 22: 5). David did this so often as when he went after the Philistines: ‘Therefore David enquired of the Lord, saying, shall I go and smite these Philistines? (1 Samuels 23: 1-4). When we go to God first for counsel, we come to the wellspring of all wisdom, for we come to the ‘Lord of hosts, who is wonderful in counsel and excellent in guidance’ (Isaiah 28:29).
Can God lead you to others?
Yes, God can also lead you to seek advice from others. When God does, we must examine the lifestyle of the person from whom we want to receive counsel. Proverbs 9:10 states: ‘the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom’, we need to know where that person stands with the Lord. What is the spiritual and moral track record of the person from whom you take important advice especially about your family and your future? Don’t be carried away with some superficial charisma for ‘Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them’ (Matthew 7:20).
Watch out for the impact of Gods word to hearing God.
